Five voice-assistant routines that make the kitchen easier
A voice assistant in the kitchen earns its place on the counter for one reason: you can use it with dirty hands. Here are the routines we actually use, in order of how often.
1. Multiple named timers
"Set a pasta timer for nine minutes" and "set an oven timer for forty minutes" run side by side, and you can ask "how long on the pasta?" without stopping. This alone justifies the speaker.
2. A shared shopping list
Say "add olive oil to the shopping list" the moment you run out. Link the list to the phone app so whoever goes to the store sees it. Most assistants support this out of the box.
3. Unit conversions
"How many grams is a cup of flour?" and "what is 180 Celsius in Fahrenheit?" are the two questions we ask most. Faster than finding a chart with wet hands.
4. A "dinner is ready" announcement
If you have more than one speaker, an announcement routine tells the whole house at once. Childish, effective.
5. A cleanup playlist
A single phrase that starts a fixed playlist signals to everyone that the kitchen is closing. Routines can bundle this with dimming the lights.
Keep the microphone in mind
All of these speakers listen for a wake word. Review the privacy settings once, delete recordings on a schedule if the option exists, and mute the microphone when you want to. The physical mute button is there for a reason.
